Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer for its Nuclear team in multiple U.S. locations, including Chicago. You will contribute to design, operation, maintenance, and licensing of nuclear plants and SMRs while leading discipline work across projects.

The role requires strong I&C design knowledge, experience with nuclear facilities, and the ability to manage technical tasks and client communications. Travel and security access may be involved as part of project work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an ABET accredited program with 7 years experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and FE exam.
  • MS degree may substitute for 1 year of experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Ability to be authorized for unescorted access at a US nuclear facility.
  • Experience with nuclear plant I&C design, design process, modification packages, configuration management, and ASME NQA-1 requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead discipline design and manage team tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and/or lead I&C design for projects from concept to design completion.
  • Support proposals with level-of-effort estimates and qualifications summaries.
  • Interface with clients to communicate progress and provide on-site technical support.
  • Manage small project budgets and schedules for technical deliverables.
  • Lead the production of instrumentation and control deliverables (Instrument Index, Data Sheets, Wiring Diagrams, Loop Diagrams).
  • Lead the production of control systems (DCS/PLC) and associated design deliverables.
  • Manage I&C purchase specifications and review vendor documentation.
  • Develop P&ID’s for various projects.
  • Determine process measurement protocols and select I&C applications.
  • Produce preliminary sizing calculations for instruments and valves.
  • Prepare level sketches with multiple departments.
  • Quality reviews of detailed engineering documents and drawings.
  • Perform field inspections and provide technical support.
