Job summary

The Ohio State University seeks a Tier 2 NOC Specialist to manage OARnet’s statewide IP/MPLS and DWDM backbone in a 24x7 NOC. You will escalate issues, follow ITIL procedures, and implement router/switch enhancements to keep the network reliable for Ohio’s education and government clients.

You will coordinate with carriers and internal teams, mentor junior staff, and participate in change controls while maintaining strong communication with customers and partners.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience required.
• 2 years of professional experience in a network operations center or with a service provider network.
• Fundamental networking concepts and protocols must be understood.
• Ability to configure and troubleshoot Juniper or Cisco routers and switches.
• Knowledge of wave division multiplexing and Metro Ethernet technologies.
• Current Juniper or Cisco Specialist certification.
• Scripting skills in Python and Bourne Shell in a Unix environment.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Acts as escalation point for customers, providers and ServiceDesk; manage tickets in ITIL environment.
• Follow and improve established NOC procedures and operational standards.
• Develop and implement enhancements to routers/switches per IT processes.
• Create and review MOPs for engineering change processes.
• Assess impact of outages and vendor maintenance; respond to SLA-related issues.
• Coordinate with national carriers to troubleshoot issues beyond OARnet control.
• Collaborate with Tier 3 and Client Services on network architecture solutions.
• Evaluate current/future tech to understand system capabilities and limits.
• Maintain professional NOC tone aligned with organizational goals.
• Mentor junior network staff and share knowledge.
