Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Progressive Care Unit, night shifts. You will provide basic nursing support under the supervision of an RN, assist with activities of daily living, hygiene, nutrition and documentation, and help ensure patient comfort and safety.

The role requires a High School diploma or GED, and either an active CNA certification or enrollment in a health science program with clinical experience.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• CENA certification, or enrollment in a health science program, or equivalent health-related experience.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and patient confidentiality preferred.
• Current BLS/CPR provider required.
• Experience in acute or extended care facility preferred.
• Must complete unit-specific core competencies per orientation checklist.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and patient comfort, including bed making and turning.
• Assist with hygiene activities for patients.
• Provide urinary catheter care (excluding insertion/removal) and wound care.
• Assist with postmortem care as needed.
• Assist with nutrition tasks including serving meals and recording intake.
• Assist with elimination and manage drains as directed by RN.
• Collect and label specimens and perform basic urine/glucose testing.
• Measure and record vital signs and weight using various scales and devices.
• Use equipment safely, including oxygen setup and suction devices.
• Follow infection control practices and universal precautions; maintain patient confidentiality.
• Document care given as directed by the RN.
• Communicate effectively using hospital systems and report observations to the RN.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the RN to support department efficiency.
