Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Observation Unit on the nights shift. The role supports RNs by delivering basic nursing care and assisting with daily activities, hygiene, and essential procedures.

The position requires a high school diploma or GED, BLS/CPR certification, and either a CNA credential or enrollment in a health-science program with clinical rotation. Experience in acute/extended care is preferred.

Qualifications

• Minimum High School Diploma or GED required.
• CNA certification, or enrollment in health science program with nursing fundamentals/clinical rotation preferred, or equivalent enrollment.
• Equivalent experience includes Medical Assistant, Paramedic, EMT, or Nurse Tech.
• Basic understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality preferred.
• Current BLS/CPR provider required.
• Acute care or extended care facility experience preferred.
• Must complete unit-specific core competencies.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living and patient comfort; bed care and turning.
• Assist with hygiene activities and basic nursing tasks under RN supervision.
• Perform urine and stool specimen collection and basic lab-related tasks.
• Measure and document vital signs and patient weight.
• Safely operate equipment and assist with oxygen, suction, and isolation precautions.
• Document care delivered and communicate observations to the RN.
• Support department efficiency and participate in ongoing education.
