Job summary

University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Ortho Trauma Med-Surg unit with night shifts. The role supports nursing care under RN guidance, performing required daily activities and basic clinical tasks to ensure patient comfort and safety.

Responsibilities include hygiene, mobility assistance, vital signs, specimen collection, and documentation. BLS/CPR is required; high school diploma or GED is necessary. 24 hrs/wk; on-call and weekends may apply.

Qualifications

• Minimum high school diploma or GED is required.
• CENA certification or enrollment in a health science program with nursing fundamentals/clinical rotation preferred.
• Equivalent health-care experience may be considered (MA, EMT, LPN, etc.).
• Basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and patient confidentiality is preferred.
• Current BLS/CPR provider required.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living and comfort, including bed care, turning, positioning, and transfers.
• Help with hygiene, nutrition, and recording intake.
• Provide catheter care (excluding insertion/removal) and wound care per RN instruction.
• Assist with postmortem care as needed.
• Record vital signs and weights; monitor patient condition and report changes.
• Operate and maintain equipment safely (oxygen, suction, ice packs, restraints, etc.).
• Maintain infection control and standard precautions; manage linen and sharps disposal.
• Document care given as directed by the RN.
• Communicate observations to the RN using Vocera, unit paging, and intercom; protect patient confidentiality.
• Perform other duties to support department efficiency and ongoing education.
