Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Patient Transporter to escort ambulatory patients and transport them by wheelchair or bed. You will assist nursing staff, handle transport equipment, and ensure safety through proper identification and handover communications.

The role requires a high school diploma and English proficiency; BLS and hospital experience are preferred. This is a non-exempt, on-call night shift position with varying hours and potential signing bonus eligibility.

Qualifications

• Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
• Required: Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
• Required: Good inter-personal skills and a customer service orientation to maintain a collaborative, patient focused effort between Patient Transportation and other hospital departments.
• Preferred: Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Preferred: Six months' experience in a hospital environment.

Responsibilities

• Escorts ambulatory patients. Transports patient by wheelchair, stretcher or bed. Verifies identification using 2 identifiers and signs Safe Patient Transport Forms; notifies clinician if discrepancy. Monitors and responds to basic patient needs during transport; provides handoff communication on delivery.
• Assists nursing staff and/or lift tech in moving and positioning of patients using lift devices; handles precaution status transfers with PPE and infection control.
• Delivers stretchers, beds, cribs and wheelchairs; participates in biannual deep-cleaning of transport equipment; sanitizes transport vehicles between uses.
• Transports patient specimens to and from Lab, Pathology, and Blood Bank; transports contaminated equipment to Sterile Processing.
• Delivers other materials such as medical records, pharmaceuticals, X-ray films, sterile items, and reports.
• Checks E-cylinders for content; distributes/exchanges E-cylinders hospital-wide.
• Interacts with TDSS dispatch system; maintains Trip Log and records.
• May participate in ED triage transport assignments during disasters; may assist in trauma transport and morgue transport.
• May assume dispatcher role if trained.
