Job summary

Mercyhealth in Rockford, IL seeks an Emergency Communications Specialist for night shifts to manage emergency and non‑emergency calls, dispatch appropriate services, and provide critical instructions to callers. The role requires monitoring multiple channels, coordinating with hospitals and EMS teams, and ensuring ECC operations 24/7.

Responsibilities include trauma team activation, weather and flight coordination, and ongoing staff training.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• 1 year of post-high school coursework in medical terminology or related field.
• 3 years’ hospital/pre-hospital or emergency dispatching experience preferred.
• Must obtain Licensed Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification within 9 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Handle emergency and non‑emergency calls and dispatch agencies.
• Monitor multiple radio channels and phone lines; coordinate with hospitals and emergency services.
• Provide pre‑arrival instructions following Medical Priority protocols and coordinate trauma response.
• Activate trauma teams and manage aircraft/heliport communications when needed.
• Train/mentoring of new staff and maintain department procedures.
