Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Morristown, NJ seeks an Assistant Structural Engineer to support project teams in designing and detailing structures for power, healthcare, industrial, and governmental facilities. You will work under licensed engineers through the design and construction phases, updating drawings and assisting with client communications.

The role requires a bachelor’s in structural engineering, strong communication, and CAD/BIM proficiency. Internship experience and EIT are a plus.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or a related field from an accredited program (ABET preferred).
• A master’s degree in Structural or Civil Engineering with emphasis preferred; ABET accreditation preferred.
• Internship or related consulting experience is preferred.
• Basic knowledge of standard structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically with strong problem-solving.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with structural analysis programs (RISA) and CAD/BIM tools (AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla).
• Strong attention to detail, collaboration and leadership skills.
• EIT certification preferred.
• GPA 3.0 strongly preferred.
• Eligible to work permanently in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Assists in the structural design from conceptual phase through design completion.
• Assists with modifying and reviewing production drawings for various facilities.
• Designs structural components per project manager requirements.
• Applies basic structural engineering concepts, codes, and procedures.
• Assists with researching and compiling project data.
• Helps update drawings using CAD software under senior engineers.
• Participates in client presentations, shop drawing reviews, and contract administration.
• Performs field inspections, measurements, or calculations.
• Supports other duties and ensures compliance with policies.
