Maryland Transit Administration Lateral Police Officer

MTA is recruiting for lateral police officers to serve on its Bus, Metro, Light Rail, and MARC Train/Commuter Bus systems. The position requires current certification as a Police Officer from the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission (MPTSC).

Salary: Credited salary ranges up to 9 years of service, starting at $77,150 and reaching $103,518. Benefits include a retirement and benefits package as a member of LEOPS.

Qualifications
  • Age / Citizenship: Minimum 21 years of age and a citizen of the United States.
  • Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate recognized by the State of Maryland.
  • Required Documentation:
    • A copy of your current certification card (if presently employed as a Maryland Police Officer).
    • A recent copy (not over 30 days) of your total driving record (not 36 months).
    • Copy of your high school diploma or GED certificate from an accredited institution.
    • Copy of your state driver’s license.
  • Selection Process: Must pass an oral interview, demonstrate effective oral and written communication, maintain good moral character and emotional stability, and complete background checks including work history, criminal records, polygraph, and psychological evaluation. Must be physically able to perform mandatory mandates, pass mandatory drug and alcohol screening, and meet mandatory physical agility testing. Must comply with MPTSC minimum training standards and be available for variable shifts.
  • Special Requirements:
    • Work 40 hours per week, including variable shifts, evenings, holidays, and weekends.
    • Subject to pre‑employment drug testing and substance abuse testing per federal and state regulations.
Licenses & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license required for operating a motor vehicle in Maryland.
  • Driving record must meet MTA standards: no more than two moving violations in the last 3 years, no more than three moving violations in the last 5 years, and no more than four current points.
  • Current MPTSC certification is mandatory and will be verified with the commission.
Additional Information

Employees must adhere to all safety rules, policies, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements. Refrain from willful violations of safety rules, reckless and negligent behavior, criminal activities, and misuse of drugs or alcohol. Disciplinary action may be taken up to and including termination. Employees must hold appropriate safety training for assigned duties.
