Job summary

University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle area seeks an MLS Trainee/1 for the Molecular Microbiology Team at the UW Medicine-Central Lab, Renton. The role performs PCR, DNA extraction, sequencing and reports results in the LIMS system, supporting patient care and collaborating with MLSs and CLTs.

Required is a bachelor’s degree in MLS or equivalent and ASCP eligibility; MLS 1 requires a year of experience. Preferred: molecular biology lab experience.

Qualifications

• Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent.
• Eligible to take the MLS ASCP certification within 18 months from date of hire.
• Current MLS certification with ASCP or equivalent certifying organization OR certification with specialty organization.
• One year of experience as an MLS Trainee for MLS 1 track.
• Desired qualification: experience in molecular biology lab work.

Responsibilities

• Performs PCR tests to identify bacteria, yeast and parasites per lab protocols.
• Performs DNA extraction, sets up PCR, real-time PCR, and sequencing reactions; operates diverse molecular equipment.
• Uses LIMS (mmdb) to enter data, print worksheets, analyze DNA sequences and prepare case reports.
• Monitors quality control and validates results; manages workloads and seeks help when needed.
• Educates new staff, students, and residents; maintains certification with ongoing training and seminars.
• Performs other routine tasks in the lab as assigned.
