Job summary

The University of Washington Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology in Renton seeks a Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainee/1 on the Microbiology team at Renton Central Lab. The role supports culture, staining, molecular and serological testing under supervision, developing competency across sections while maintaining accuracy and safety.

Qualifications

• Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent.
• Eligible to sit ASCP MLS exam within 18 months of hire.
• Completion of MLS trainee program or equivalent laboratory externship counts toward experience.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, evaluate, and report smears including Gram stains and other stains.
• Perform bacterial, yeast, mold and parasite identifications on routine benches.
• Conduct serological procedures such as PCR, EIA, and latex agglutinations.
• Operate and maintain automated instruments and quality control procedures.
• Document results and communicate critical values to medical staff.
