Job summary

UW Medicine’s Division of Infectious Disease Diagnostics in Renton, WA seeks two Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Trainee/1 at the Renton Central Laboratory. The role involves performing infectious disease diagnostic testing across microbiology, virology, molecular diagnostics, and related methods to support patient care.

Qualifications

• Accredited bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science or equivalent education/experience.
• Eligibility to take the MLS ASCP certification within 18 months of hire; failure to attain may lead to termination.
• MLS1 requires current MLS certification or equivalent specialty certification and 1 year of MLS experience.

Responsibilities

• Perform infectious disease diagnostic testing per procedures and quality standards.
• Prepare, evaluate, and report Gram stains, KOH, Pneumocystis DFA, and other stains.
• Carry out routine identification of bacteria, yeast, and parasites.
• Perform antimicrobial susceptibility testing (disk diffusion, Etest, MIC).
• Execute serological and molecular testing (latex agglutination, EIA, PCR).
• Operate diverse lab instruments (cultures, mass spectrometry, BioFire, GeneXpert, microscopes).
• Document and interpret results; communicate critical findings to clinical staff.
• Contribute to development, validation, and troubleshooting of procedures and workflows.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in medical laboratory science

Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification (ASCP) or equivalent (MLS1)
