Job summary

American Electric Power is seeking a Meter Technician to install, test, program, and maintain self-contained meters energized up to 240 volts in shop and customer locations. The role involves reading meters, disconnect/reconnect for non-payment, and investigating irregular usage.

Ideal candidates have an associate degree in electrical/electronic technology or equivalent and hands-on experience in metering, testing, and electrical maintenance.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in electrical/electronic technology or equivalent combination of education, training and relevant work experience of four years.
• Qualified backgrounds include substation, metering, instrumentation, controls, power systems, or electrical maintenance, with hands‑on experience in testing, troubleshooting, and working with electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

• Read meters for field orders and cycle billing.
• Install, remove, change disconnect, and reconnect meters.
• Test single phase, network, and polyphase self-contained meters for proper operation and accuracy.
• Program meters.
• Perform Credit and Collections related order including disconnect/reconnect for non-payment.
• Investigate irregular usage and energy diversion.
• Repair meters, meter sockets, and meter enclosures.
• Order, receive, ship, store, and inventory meter and equipment.
• Investigate power quality problems and produce reports.
• Perform work from ladders and elevated platforms.
