Job summary

Summer Consultants Inc. is seeking Mechanical Engineering Interns for Summer 2027 to explore how classroom concepts become real designs in buildings.

You will work on mechanical and plumbing systems within renovations of federal, institutional, and historic facilities while gaining hands-on experience in the field and office. You will assist with surveys, calculations, equipment selection, layouts, and drawings, and you’ll learn how existing conditions influence practical design decisions.

Qualifications

• Two years toward Bachelor's in Architectural Engineering (HVAC focus), Mechanical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering Technology.
• Interest in HVAC, plumbing, building systems, and renovations of existing buildings.
• Curiosity about how buildings are constructed, operated, maintained and modified.
• Willingness to spend meaningful time in the field surveying existing conditions.
• Ability to learn from engineers, ask questions, and contribute to a project team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency in Word and Excel.
• AutoCAD and Revit experience preferred.
• Field activities may require walking long distances and climbing.

Responsibilities

• Support mechanical and plumbing design on renovation and existing-building projects.
• Participate in field surveys to observe and document conditions.
• Assist with HVAC and plumbing calculations, equipment selection, layouts, and documentation.
• Translate survey information and constraints into project drawings and notes.
• Use Revit and AutoCAD to support project work.
• Coordinate with engineers and designers from other disciplines.
• Ask questions, apply feedback, and take on more responsibility as skills develop.
• Help solve client problems with curiosity, precision, quality and follow-through.
