Job summary

ScionHealth is seeking a Medical Coding Specialist to code diagnoses and procedures in patient medical records using ICD-9-CM and to input data into our automated system. Accuracy and adherence to official guidelines are essential.

You will ensure DRG factors are properly assigned, coordinate with hospital staff for details, and support regulatory compliance while maintaining strict confidentiality of patient information in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Qualifications

• Education: High School or equivalency required; College degree preferred.
• Licenses / Certification: CCS and/or RHIT or RHIA preferred.
• Experience: 3 years acute care inpatient/outpatient coding.

Responsibilities

• Code diagnoses and procedures in patient records using ICD-9-CM.
• Ensure accurate DRG factors and proper diagnosis ranking.
• Contact hospital staff for details or terminology to improve codes.
• Enter final diagnostic codes into the automated grouper system.
• Maintain compliance with federal/state regulations and internal procedures.
• Respond to inquiries regarding medical documentation and DRGs.
