Description

SUMMARY
Oversees and directs crew members to ensure daily tasks are carried out in a safe, timely and efficient manner. Must be able to read isometric drawings, derive location, orientation, size and diameter of piping or other equipment and any other tasks involved in installing/maintaining piping systems. Some of these duties may include layouts, fabrication, assembly, installs and maintaining piping systems, pipe supports, fixtures, and related hydraulic and pneumatic equipment for steam, hot water fixtures and equipment for steam, heating, cooling, lubricating, sprinkling and production and processing systems.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Selects type and size of pipe and related materials and equipment, such as supports, hangers, and hydraulic cylinders, according to job specifications.
2. Inspects worksite to determine presence of obstructions.
3. Plans sequence on installation to avoid obstructions and activities of other workers.
4. Cuts pipe using hacksaw, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machine.
5. Threads pipe using threading machine.
6. Bends pipe by hand or with pipe-bending tools and machine.
7. Mounts pipe hangers and brackets on walls and ceiling to hold pipe.
8. Assembles and installs a variety of metal or nonmetal pipes and pipe fittings, using threaded caulked, soldering, brazen, fused, or cemented joints, and hand tools.
9. Secures pipes to structure with bracket, clamps, and hangers, using hand and power tools.
10. Installs and maintains refrigeration and air conditioning systems, including compressors, pumps, meter, pneumatic and hydraulic controls and piping.
11. Tests piping systems for leaks by increasing pressure in pipes and observing gauges attached to pipes for indication of leaks.
12. Welds pipe supports to structural steel members.
13. May observe production machines in assigned area of manufacturing facility to detect machinery malfunctions. May operate machinery to verify repair.
14. Loads, transports and unloads material, tools, equipment and supplies.
15. May assist in lifting, positioning and securing of material and work pieces during installation.
16. Performs minor maintenance of cleaning activities of tools and equipment.
17. Respiratory protection is common and may be required.
18. Responsible for observing and complying with all safety and project rules. Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS
May require a high school diploma or its equivalent with previous years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the particular field. Will plan own work and delegate tasks to crew members in order to complete tasks timely, safely and efficiently. Will require independent judgement on daily tasks. Will report to a site General Foreman and/or Site Manager.
