Job summary

The New School's Parsons School for Design is seeking Student Assistants for the Digital Tools Shops (3D Lab, CNC Shops, Laser Lab, D12 Prototyping Shop) within the Making Center. This on‑campus role supports students and faculty by checking out tools, handling reservations, and assisting with shop operations.

You will assist in the 3D Lab, Laser Lab, D12 Prototyping, and CNC Shops, maintain safety and cleanliness, and participate in staff training.

Qualifications

• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
• Strong organizational and time‑management abilities.
• Ability to adapt to schedule changes and notify supervisors.
• Ability to work independently or with little supervision.
• Familiarity with Google Suite (Calendar, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.).
• Physical ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
• Flexibility to work non‑traditional hours, evenings, and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Provide a high level of customer service and foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for students, faculty, and staff.
• Assist students and faculty with checkout of tools and equipment, reservations, and equipment requests.
• Monitor shop space, safety, and reception duties including greeting visitors and answering phone calls.
• Assist with daily processes and projects for Managers, Technicians, and Making Center Staff.
• Support the 3D Lab: check‑in, 3D printing consultations, operating printers, and managing the print submission wait‑list.
• Support the Laser Lab: certify students for laser cutting consultations, review cutting files, troubleshoot laser cuts, and ensure proper orientation.
• Support the D12 Prototyping Shop with tasks related to rapid prototyping and device fabrication.
• Support the CNC Shops with CNC consultations, loading/unloading materials, and operating CNC machinery.
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and upkeep of shops, tools, and equipment.
• Assist in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of machinery and shop facilities.
• Complete special projects as assigned and participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
