Job summary

The New School's Parsons School for Design, within the Making Center, seeks Student Assistants for the Digital Tools Shops (3D Lab, CNC Shops, Laser Lab, D12 Prototing Shop). You will support checkout, monitor spaces, and assist managers with daily tasks to keep labs clean and functional.

Ideal candidates are personable, proactive, and detail-oriented, with strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work evenings or weekends as needed. On-campus position; hourly pay $17.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, close attention to detail, and strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Able to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisor and communicate clearly with Making Center users.
  • Adaptable and consistent when notifying the supervisor of schedule changes.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work without close supervision or alone.
  • Familiarity with Google Suite (Calendar, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc.).
  • Ability to lift items up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours such as evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment and a respectful shop culture for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Provide a high level of customer service, maintaining a positive and professional demeanor in all interactions with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Report for shift on time and review priority tasks with the supervisor.
  • Monitor patrons entering and exiting the shop space and be ready and available to assist them.
  • Provide information to students, faculty, staff, and the general public regarding department services, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform basic reception duties, including greeting visitors and answering phone calls professionally and courteously.
  • Assist students and faculty with reservations and equipment requests.
  • Assist Making Center Staff with shop upkeep, organization, and maintenance, including: 3D Lab..., Laser Lab..., D12 Prototyping..., CNC Shops...
  • Perform regular upkeep of shops and spaces to maintain organization and cleanliness.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in training sessions and staff meetings.

Job description

Parsons School for Design, a division of The New School, seeks Student Assistants in the Digital Tools Shops (3D Lab, CNC Shops, Laser Lab, D12 Prototyping Shop) within the Making Center. The Making Center is a collection of more than 70,000 square feet of labs, shops, studios, and open workspaces that provide curricular support for making across a broad range of mediums and disciplines and support experimentation and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Students will be personable, proactive, detail‑oriented individuals who become integral to the daily workings of the facilities. Students will assist with checkout of tools and equipment, monitor making spaces, and support Managers and Technicians with daily processes and projects, keeping the facilities clean and orderly.

Responsibilities

    • 3D Lab: checking in and assisting with 3D printing consultations, operating 3D printers, managing print submission waitlist.
    • Laser Lab: checking in students for laser cutting consultations and orientations, reviewing files for laser cutting and engraving, troubleshooting problems with student cuts.
    • D12 Prototyping: assisting with prototyping activities.
    • CNC Shops: assisting with CNC consultations and orientations, loading and unloading materials, operations room cleaning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of machinery.
  • Perform regular upkeep of shops and spaces to maintain organization and cleanliness.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
  • Participate in training sessions and staff meetings.

Work Mode: On‑Campus Position – Employees are expected to work on‑campus during regularly scheduled work hours.
