Job summary

Norfolk Southern invites candidates to join a hands-on Locomotive Electrician Trainee program. The role builds expertise in inspecting, repairing, and installing electrical systems on diesel-electric locomotives through classroom and field instruction.

The program prepares technicians for a senior union position with extensive travel for training, varied shifts, and mandatory safety and drug testing. Lodging is provided during training as part of the union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment on locomotives.
• Read electrical prints and test circuits using diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and high/low voltage concerns.
• Operate and move locomotives within shop limits as needed.
• Wear protective equipment and complete annual safety training.
