Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. invites applications for a Locomotive Electrician Trainee. This hands-on program trains you to inspect, repair, and install electrical systems on diesel-electric locomotives to ensure safe and efficient operations across the network.

The position is seniority-based and union-driven, requiring availability for nights, weekends, and holidays. Training combines classroom instruction with on-the-job field practice over about seven weeks, with lodging provided and travel

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment on locomotives.
• Measure, cut, thread, bend, and assemble connections to control panels and junction boxes.
• Read electrical prints and test circuits using diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and voltage problems.
• Operate locomotives within shop limits as needed.
• Perform safety training and wear required PPE.
