Job summary

Norfolk Southern seeks a motivated individual to join its Locomotive Electrician Trainee program, combining classroom instruction with field training to maintain and repair locomotive electrical systems across the network.

The role is shift-based, with extensive travel for training and mandatory union membership within 60 days of seniority. This is a safety-sensitive, hands-on opportunity to advance toward Journeyman status.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be 18 years or older.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Pass pre-employment drug and medical screening.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather and perform heavy labor.

Responsibilities

  • Wire, maintain, repair, and install electrical equipment on locomotives.
  • Read electrical prints and test circuits with diagnostic tools.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions and control systems.
  • Operate within shop and field settings with proper safety protocols.
  • Examine parts for wear and defects and perform routine inspections.
  • Complete safety training and comply with FRA requirements.
  • Move locomotives within shop limits as required.
