Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. is seeking candidates for a Locomotive Electrician Trainee. This hands-on, field-based program trains workers to inspect, repair, and install electrical systems on diesel-electric locomotives.

The role requires readiness to travel for training and to work nights, weekends, and holidays as part of a seniority-based union position. Training spans classroom and field instruction, with lodging provided and travel reimbursed per union agreement.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Must pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with all railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment on diesel-electric locomotives.
• Measure, cut, thread, bend, and assemble connections to control panels and junction boxes.
• Read electrical prints and test circuits using multimeters, amp clamps, and other diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and high/low voltage grounds.
• Work safely to prevent on-the-job accidents and injuries; wear protective gear; complete safety training.
