Job summary

Norfolk Southern Corp. invites applications for the Locomotive Electrician Trainee role. This hands-on, field-based program prepares individuals for a career in locomotive electrical maintenance through classroom instruction and on-the-job training.

Trainees learn to inspect, repair, and install electrical systems on diesel-electric locomotives to ensure safe operations. The program includes classroom and field training, with lodging provided and travel reimbursed under union agreements.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• 18 years of age or older.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and physical standards.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform heavy physical labor.
• Must pass a post-offer medical examination, including a drug test.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment on locomotives.
• Read electrical prints and test circuits using diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging and transition issues.
• Operate locomotives within shop limits and participate in safety training.
