Job summary

Norfolk Southern is seeking an Electrician Trainee to join our locomotive maintenance team. This union role emphasizes safety, performance, integrity, and teamwork as you train across shop and field environments to support locomotive electrical systems.

Expect classroom and hands-on field training over ~7 weeks, with lodging provided and travel reimbursed per union agreement. You will progress through structured pay steps while developing skills in wiring, diagnostics, and safe operation of

Qualifications

• Two years electrician experience.
• Completion of an electrical vocational or trade school program.
• Journeyman Electrician certification.
• One year experience reading blueprints or electrical schematics.

Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with railroad rules, safety regulations, and federal standards.
• Wire, maintain, repair, rebuild, inspect, and install electrical equipment such as rheostats, control systems, transformers, motors, generators, welding machines, lighting fixtures, battery charging systems, magnet coils, switchboards, meters, compensators, and rotors.
• Read electrical prints, test circuits, and connections using multimeters, amp clamps, and diagnostic tools.
• Diagnose and repair electrical malfunctions including charging issues and high/low voltage grounds.
• Operate and move locomotives within shop limits as needed.
• Maintain safety by using PPE and completing training and examinations.
