Job summary

YMCA of Greater Houston is seeking a vigilant Lifeguard to maintain safe swimming conditions in pool areas and surrounding decks while promoting member safety and healthy living. You will enforce rules, perform maintenance, test chemicals, and participate in trainings to support a positive, safe environment for youth and adults.

The role requires current YMCA Lifeguard Certification (or within 30 days), CPR for the Professional Rescuer/First Aid, and the ability to respond quickly to

Qualifications

• Minimum age 16 years.
• Current YMCA Lifeguard Certification (or obtain within 30 days).
• Current/or must obtain CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, Emergency Oxygen, Child Abuse Prevention Training, Information Security Awareness, Workplace Harassment and Bullying, Universal Precautions, and New Staff Orientation.
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups and follow safety rules.

Responsibilities

• Know, understand and follow emergency procedures and respond immediately per YMCA standards.
• Enforce safety rules, swim testing procedures, and guidelines for pool areas.
• Perform pool and area maintenance to ensure safety and cleanliness (vacuuming, deck tiles, trash).
• Test and record pool chemicals as required by YMCA standards and health codes.
• Conduct daily equipment checks and ensure necessary equipment is available.
• Monitor pool hazards on arrival and continuously assess risks to prevent incidents.
• Maintain required certifications per YMCA standards.
• Attend staff trainings and meetings (minimum 4 hours in-service per month).
• Maintain vigilant pool surveillance and execute rescues within stated times.
• Build positive relationships with members and staff, communicating rules firmly but kindly.
• Report suspicious behavior and policy violations; follow abuse and incident reporting requirements.
• Meet deadlines related to supporting systems and timekeeping (e.g., Kronos).
• Swim assessment will be conducted during interviews; pass requirements to be considered.
• If lifeguard certified, skills evaluation on certain rescue skills may be added.
