Job summary

Indian Health Service in the United States seeks a Medical Technician (Laboratory Support) to perform laboratory tests across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and more, while ensuring specimen integrity and timely reporting.

You will assist with accessioning, quality control, and communication with clinicians, supporting accreditation and safety standards in a mission-driven public health setting.

Qualifications

• GS-04 requires six months general experience.
• GS-04 requires six months specialized experience in technical medical laboratory support.
• An associate degree program in certified laboratory assistance.
• One year of study with chemistry/biological sciences plus a full-time medical/clinical laboratory assistant training program.
• Two years of study with chemistry/biological sciences related to the position.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory testing in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking; adapt procedures for unusual specimens.
• Evaluate test results; recognize normal and abnormal findings; troubleshoot or repeat procedures.
• Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments; prepare reagents, stains, culture media; monitor quality control.
• Collect and process patient specimens; evaluate specimen acceptability; accession and track specimens; prepare for referral testing.
• Validate and document laboratory results; communicate information to healthcare providers; support quality assurance and accreditation per CAP, CLIA and safety requirements.

Education

Associate degree in certified laboratory assistant program

Bachelor's degree in related field

Chemistry/biology study with lab training program

Two years of chemistry/biology study
