Job summary

Indian Health Service is seeking a Medical Technician (Laboratory Support) to conduct a range of clinical laboratory tests across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and more. You will collect and process specimens, document results, and support quality assurance and accreditation in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities include operating and maintaining instruments, preparing reagents, and ensuring accurate results for healthcare providers in Indian communities.

Qualifications

• GS-04: 6 months general experience or 6 months specialized experience in technical medical laboratory support.

Responsibilities

• Perform laboratory tests across chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis, immunology, serology, and blood banking; adapt procedures for unusual specimens.
• Evaluate test results; troubleshoot or repeat procedures to ensure accuracy.
• Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot and maintain laboratory instruments; prepare reagents and culture media; monitor quality control.
• Collect and process patient specimens; accession and track specimens in laboratory systems; prepare specimens for referral testing.
• Validate and document laboratory results; communicate findings to providers; support quality assurance and accreditation per CAP, CLIA and safety requirements.

Education

Associate degree with certified laboratory assistant training

Bachelor's degree in a related field

Chemistry and/or biological sciences coursework (6+ semester hours) plus training program

Graduate education related to laboratory work
