Library Community Service Officer (Part-Time)

Job Summary

This is a part‑time, benefited position. The Library Community Service Officer reports to and receives supervision from the Lead Library Security Officer. The officer is responsible for providing a safe and secure environment for patrons, staff, collections, and facilities at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library.

Key Responsibilities

• Encourage compliance with library policies
• Report suspected hazards and criminal behavior
• Provide assistance to patrons and staff as requested
• Respond to alarms and other calls for service
• Write police reports
• Respond to alarms from theft detection devices
• Provide information to patrons coming to the library
• Create a professional atmosphere that comforts patrons and deters criminal activity
• Monitor Integrated Security System and Alarms
• Monitor Elevator Command Computer System
• Operate Radio Base Station for Security Officers and UPD

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to quickly learn, understand, and apply San Jose State University and City of San Jose rules and regulations
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws
• Ability to use public safety equipment and systems
• Prepare clear and concise reports
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Deal tactfully and effectively with a wide range of people

• Operate a computer card key badging station
• Operate InfoGraphics Alarms system

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent

License

A valid driver’s license is required. Out of state candidates must obtain a California driver’s license within 10 days of hire and complete the Defensive Driver Training Program.

Preferred Qualifications

• Six months of previous police/security/military law enforcement training or experience
• Library security experience
• Customer service experience

Compensation

Classification: Community Service Specialist I
Anticipated Hiring Range: $2,329.50/month (Part‑Time, Step 16)
Hiring Range: $3,461/month – $5,043/month (Steps 1–20)
Employees receive a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30–35% of the base salary.
