Job summary

UnitedHealth Group, through Optum Health AI, is seeking a Lead AI/ML Engineer to drive production-ready Voice AI capabilities, real-time transcription, and multilingual switching. You will guide a team, set engineering standards, and ensure ethical, secure AI across the life cycle.

Role focuses on scalable enterprise solutions, cross-functional collaboration with ECS Business, and ongoing improvement of patient-agent workflows using cutting-edge AI and cloud platforms.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS/engineering or related field; 4+ years of software engineering may substitute for degree.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience with production-grade AI/ML models/systems.
• 3+ years leading engineering teams and defining standards; architecture leadership.
• 4+ years developing applications leveraging LLMs, agentic AI, and observability platforms.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor AI/ML engineers; set technical direction and standards.
• Design and deploy Voice AI capabilities including multilingual switching and real-time transcription.
• Translate AI advances into scalable, production-ready enterprise capabilities.
• Partner with ECS Business for solution architecture, cost estimation, and roadmap alignment.
• Embed ethical AI and HIPAA security across the development lifecycle.
• Implement dynamic forms, adaptive updates, and conditional logic for patient-agent workflows.
• Define enterprise standards for evaluating external AI vendors.
• Use enterprise-approved AI tools to automate workflows and accelerate delivery.
