Job summary

WSP in Saint Louis, MO is seeking a Lead Substation Project Engineer to support the Power & Energy Substation Team. You will lead high-voltage substation design efforts, manage multi-site projects, and mentor junior engineers in a collaborative, fast-paced setting.

You will contribute to detailed design, QA/QC, and coordination with utilities and clients while ensuring compliance with IEEE/ANSI standards and safety policies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience).
• 7–10 years post education experience designing electrical power projects.
• Professional Engineering license (PE).
• Experience in 15kV–230kV substation design and IEEE/ANSI standards.
• Experience as electrical engineer on multiple substation projects concurrently.
• Knowledge of adjacent disciplines: P&C, SCADA, and telecom.
• Knowledge of electrical construction laws, codes, and compliance.
• Strong technical computation and interpretation of plans and specs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication; capable with engineers and non-engineers.
• Self-leadership, attention to detail, multi-tasking, prioritization.
• Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and guide junior staff.
• Proficiency with Inventor, AutoCAD Electrical, and MS Office.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving from data and tests.
• Coordinate subcontractors and ensure safe, efficient completion.
• Commitment to workplace safety and policy compliance.
• Travel as project needs require.

Responsibilities

• Support the Area Lead/Department Manager in achieving department goals, maintaining high-quality standards, and strengthening client relationships.
• Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, quality, and deliverables for assigned projects.
• Support the management of relationships with alliance clients, project reporting, and proposal development.
• Perform QA/QC reviews and contribute to substation equipment specifications.
• Direct detailed design of medium to extra-high-voltage substations, including one‑lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, SCADA/communications, and layouts.
• Prepare design documents such as sections/elevations, control enclosure details, cable/conduit plans, ground grid plans, foundation details, and lightning protection.
• Conduct substation analyses and calculations (AC/DC studies, lightning analysis, voltage drop).
• Mentor and train team members while adhering to client standards and processes.
• Work in a fast-paced environment while tracking, organizing, and prioritizing multiple tasks.
• Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
• Participate in travel and site visits as needed.
