Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer in the United States to lead a design team on HV/EHV substations, focusing on protection, control, and communications.

You will prepare relay philosophies, oversee SCADA concepts, mentor engineers, and coordinate with clients, vendors, and project managers to deliver complete designs and documentation. Travel to client sites may be required.

Qualifications

• Requires a BS in Engineering.
• 10+ years experience in protection/control/telecommunications for HV substations.
• PE license.
• Experience with client liaison in lead engineering roles.
• Experience writing relay calculation support documentation.
• Familiar with drawing production: plans, blueprints, drawings, models.
• Proficiency with SKM, ETAP, ASPEN, CDEGS or vendor software.
• Familiar with NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI standards.
• Experience with vendor protective relay equipment (SEL, ABB, GE, Areva, Basler).
• MS Office proficiency.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead engineering and design team for substation upgrades, producing calculations, designs and specs.
• Prepare relay philosophies, SCADA/telecom concepts, and oversee I/O assignments and diagrams.
• Mentor junior and senior engineers; coordinate detailed design phases.
• Support investigations, troubleshooting, and engineering issue resolution.
• Analyze single line diagrams, relaying/metering diagrams, and DC schematics.
• Prepare engineering studies for client and peer review.
• Perform independent reviews of others' work, including calculations and drawings.
• Coordinate with engineers, PMs, clients, and suppliers for timely designs.
• Review existing facilities for upgrades; present findings and recommendations.
• Develop career via Communities of Practice and mentor development.
• Travel to client/vendor offices and plant sites for reviews and field verification.
