Job summary

Qualus is seeking a Principal Substation Design Engineer to lead high-voltage substation projects from concept to construction. You will mentor junior teams, ensure code-compliant solutions, and collaborate with clients and cross-functional teams to drive project success while prioritizing safety and reliability.

This role offers remote work within the United States with preferred hybrid options near listed office locations, including Farmington, UT.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• 15+ years of experience in substation physical design engineering.
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Excellent document management and organization skills.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities and deadlines simultaneously.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team and interact with clients/stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Design power utility substations using applicable codes and client standards (if available).
• Include general arrangement, equipment and electrical layout, elevation views, cable trench, grounding, conduit drawings, details, BOM, and AC/DC power systems.
• Design ground grids based on applicable codes using industry software.
• Design lightning protection and grounding plans.
• Complete calculations such as AC/DC load, bus spans, and ampacity.
• Create equipment and material specifications for procurement and cost estimates.
• Complete conceptual designs and facility planning layouts.
• Prepare documentation to assist procurement, construction and O&M.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, vendors, and contractors for project execution.
• Lead and participate in client meetings and site visits to gather data and present solutions.
• Lead and ensure QA/QC processes and technical design package approvals.
• Provide mentorship and oversight to junior engineers and designers.
