Elastic seeks a Principal Software Engineer to drive technical direction in the Billing Core domain. This hands-on role designs systems, improves operations, and scales billing services across AWS, GCP, and Azure.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in backend or platform engineering with Python and PostgreSQL
• Proven experience improving reliability, observability, and incident response in production systems
• Cloud infrastructure experience across AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Ability to lead multi-quarter projects and build consensus
• Mentoring engineers and setting technical direction
• Experience with SaaS billing, metering, or financial systems is a plus
• Strong written and verbal communication across technical and non-technical partners
• Comfortable working in a global, distributed, async environment
• DoD IL4 or higher cloud environment eligibility

Responsibilities

• Own complex billing and account management systems spanning multiple services and clouds
• Build large-scale data pipelines for billing data ingestion, transformation, and reconciliation
• Improve observability, incident response, and reliability of core billing systems
• Shape system architecture for scale and modularity; guide service design and data modeling
• Collaborate with SRE and Cloud teams to improve deployment, monitoring, and CI/CD
• Own PostgreSQL data architecture and performance; focus on speed and high availability
• Be the go-to technical reviewer for the billing core stack; maintain standards
• Mentor engineers and tech leads across Billing to raise engineering standards
• Collaborate with Product, Design, and Finance on roadmaps and feasibility
• Participate in on-call rotations ensuring production readiness through automation
