Job summary

Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Genetic Sciences Division seeks a Staff Engineer to lead the design and commercialization of next-generation consumables for molecular biology and sample-to-answer workflows at the Pleasanton, CA facility. You will integrate fluid handling, materials, reagents and interfaces while balancing performance, usability, manufacturability and cost.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, materials science or related discipline.
• Industry experience commercializing microfluidic consumables for molecular biology or diagnostics.
• Proven success taking consumables from concept through tooling, manufacturing scale-up and launch.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of consumables, cartridges and microfluidic systems for molecular biology and sample-preparation workflows.
• Translate workflows into fluidic functions and interface definitions.
• Develop architectures with fluid transport, metering, mixing, thermal control and waste management.
• Lead prototyping, modeling and trade studies across materials and form factors.
• Optimize interactions among consumables, assays, reagents, instruments and users.
• Evaluate concepts for performance, manufacturability, yield and cost.
• Balance consumable complexity with instrument functionality for optimal system performance.
