Job summary

The City of Detroit is seeking a Supervising Mechanical Inspector within the Buildings Safety Engineering and Environmental Department. The role supervises a team of inspectors enforcing mechanical codes, city ordinances, and related regulations, with duties spanning plan review, field inspections, and staff guidance.

Responsibilities include coordinating inspection activities, advising on code interpretations, and ensuring compliance across projects.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED or equivalent.
  • Two years of advanced training in mechanical engineering principles and construction methods.
  • Three years of inspectional activity experience in the trades or construction area.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce departmental policies and regulations effectively.
  • Supervise inspectors engaged in enforcement of codes and city ordinances.
  • Plan, assign, and schedule the work of inspectors.
  • Oversee inspection of construction plans and specifications.
  • Review plans, specifications and reports of inspections.
  • Advise subordinates on problems and provide interpretation of legislation and policies.
  • Train new employees in their duties and review performance.
  • Review and approve notices of violations; conduct investigations and prepare reports.
