Job summary

City of Royal Oak is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to enforce the State Mechanical Code across furnace installations, air handling systems, chimneys and related HVAC work. Duties include inspecting installations, reviewing plans, issuing permits, and enforcing all relevant city, state and county regulations.

Qualified candidates will be registered or eligible to register as a Mechanical Inspector and Plan Reviewer in Michigan, with a valid driver’s license and strong report-writing skills.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Currently registered, or eligible to become registered as a "Mechanical Inspector" and “Plan Reviewer” by the State of Michigan.
• Licenses: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Thorough knowledge of HVAC technology and its application under various conditions.
• Some knowledge of commonly used computer software.
• Ability to interpret plans and specifications relative to the State Mechanical Code.
• Ability to maintain good working relations with contractors, property owners, the public, and employees.
• Ability to write clear, comprehensive reports.

Responsibilities

• Inspect all mechanical installations during construction and upon completion for compliance with the State Mechanical Code and approved plans.
• Enforce the State Mechanical Code and related regulations at city, state, and county levels.
• Assist with permit applications and issue permits to contractors and homeowners.
• Inspect replacement furnaces and related HVAC equipment in existing buildings.
• Review HVAC system plans for new and renovated buildings.
• Investigate complaints regarding mechanical installations.
• Verify work is performed by licensed mechanics as required by state law.
• Prepare reports and maintain records.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
