Job summary

City of Ann Arbor is seeking a Mechanical Inspector to enforce the Michigan Mechanical Code across residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. You will inspect systems, review permits, document results, and advise on compliant installations.

Required are a High School Diploma, a Michigan mechanical license in three categories with at least one year of related experience, CEU maintenance, and ACT 407 registration. Union representation AFSCME applies; benefits are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field inspections of mechanical systems to ensure compliance with the Michigan Mechanical Code and local regulations.
  • Review permit applications and mechanical plans for compliance before inspections.
  • Inspect HVAC, refrigeration, and related systems and identify code violations with corrective actions.
  • Document inspection results with detailed reports and photographs.
  • Provide guidance on mechanical code requirements to contractors and building owners.
  • Respond to public inquiries and maintain knowledge of current codes and standards.
  • Stay updated on changes to codes and participate in professional development.
  • Collaborate with city departments and stakeholders to ensure community safety.

Description

Starting Rate: $32.18 - 35.53 (Offer will be commensurate with experience). After hire, pay increases are dependent on length of service, advancement in the position, and other contractual factors.

Duties
  • Conduct field inspections of mechanical systems in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure compliance with the Michigan Mechanical Code, local ordinances, and other applicable safety regulations.
  • Review permit applications and approved mechanical plans to ensure systems and installations are in compliance before conducting inspections.
  • Inspect mechanical equipment, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) systems, refrigeration systems, ductwork, piping, and related components.
  • Identify code violations, unsafe conditions, and substandard installations during inspections and issue corrective action notices where necessary.
  • Document inspection results, including writing detailed reports, taking photographs, and tracking corrective actions taken by contractors to ensure code compliance.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to contractors, building owners, and homeowners on mechanical code requirements and safe installation practices.
  • Respond to inquiries and complaints from the public regarding mechanical system issues and code enforcement.
  • Stay current with changes to mechanical codes, building codes, and industry standards through continuing education and professional development.
  • Work closely with other city departments, agencies, and external stakeholders to ensure the safety and integrity of mechanical systems in the community.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines related to mechanical inspections and code enforcement.
  • Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Interpret and explain City codes and regulations.
Education, Training And Experience Required
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Currently hold a mechanical license from the State of Michigan in three of the four categories and have at least one year: Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping, HVAC equipment, Refrigeration, or Fire suppression.
  • Must complete CEU’s for maintenance of Licenses and Certifications.
  • Act 407 (formerly Act 54) registration or (within 30 days of hire, must apply for ACT 407 registration with the State of Michigan).
Education, Training And Experience Preferred
  • Currently registered with the State of Michigan as a Mechanical Inspector and Mechanical Plan Reviewer.
  • Two (2) years mechanical inspection and mechanical plan review experience.
Licensing Requirements
  • Currently hold a mechanical license from the State of Michigan in three of the four categories and have at least one year: Hydronic heating and cooling and process piping, HVAC equipment, Refrigeration, or Fire suppression.
  • Specific requirements for each discipline must be met. Requirements can be found at State of Michigan Administration Code.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
Physical Requirements

The physical ability to climb/balance, climb stairs, ladders, inclines, uneven surfaces where balance is required; drive; stoop; bend; kneel and crouch; stand and walk for extensive periods of time; reach, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, hear, see, talk and perform repetitive motions. The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. The ability to safely maneuver in and around construction sites, traverse on rough, uneven terrain, as well as wet and slippery surfaces to access work areas. The work requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time and occasionally move and lift objects weighing up to 20 pounds such as files, supplies, mail, and equipment.
