Job summary

The City of Detroit is seeking an Electrical Inspector in the Buildings Safety Engineering and Environmental Department to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code and City ordinances across various building types. This role conducts thorough inspections, investigates violations, and prepares necessary reports and documentation.

Candidates should have a valid Journeyman/Master Electrician license, and relevant experience in electrical construction, maintenance, and inspection.

Qualifications

• High school graduation or GED.
• Two years of training in electrical principles and their practical application.
• One year of related trade instruction preferred.
• Two years as a Licensed Electrical Journeyperson with experience in construction, maintenance, testing of installations and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Inspect electrical wiring and installations in diverse buildings to ensure compliance with the National Electrical Code and City ordinances.
• Investigate unpermitted electrical work or work by unlicensed persons.
• Prepare inspection reports and notices of violations.
• Investigate accidents and fires of electrical origin and testify in court as needed.
• Assist in licensing processes and train new staff assigned to the activity.
• Compile information for code violation cases and perform re-inspections as required.
