Job summary

AeroVironment, based in California, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer (Embedded) to lead development of unmanned and robotic systems for defense and commercial use. You will create software for embedded devices, test in flight environments, and optimize performance, stability, and scalability.

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or related field is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
• Minimum 12 - 15 years of experience
• Proficiency with Python, C, C++11, C++ STL and/or OpenCL
• Experience with Visual Studio, Eclipse or similar IDE and defect tracking tools
• Experience with RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB protocols
• Strong mathematical and analytical skills
• Periodic travel for testing equipment
• Ability to work long hours and in field test environments

Responsibilities

• Writes and tests software to support integration of sensors and embedded processors into aircraft or robotic systems
• Designs software for prototypes and products using AeroVironment tools; ensures configuration control
• Leads in writing system requirements, tests, and validation; assists with hardware selection
• Leads rapid prototyping and estimates development time to fit timelines
• Collaborates with other engineering disciplines and supports transition to production and certification
• Develops proof of concept demonstrations and participates in design reviews
• Contributes to AV's software development process and produces quality code
• Solves significant, unique problems requiring deep analysis
