Job summary

AeroVironment in California is seeking a Principal Software Engineer (Embedded) to lead the development of unmanned and robotic systems for defense and commercial applications. You will write and test embedded software for flight-worthy devices, design and debug system software, and drive improvements in efficiency, stability and scalability.

You will collaborate across disciplines, guide rapid prototyping, support transition to production and certification, and contribute to quality code

Qualifications

BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering or related field.
12–15 years of relevant experience.
Proficient with Python, C, C++11, C++ STL and/or OpenCL.
Experience with Visual Studio or Eclipse and defect tracking tools.
Experience with RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB protocols.

Responsibilities

Writes and tests software to support integration of sensors and embedded processors into aircraft or robotic systems.
Designs software for prototypes and products using established tools; ensures configuration control.
Leads in writing system requirements, test plans, diagnostic tools, and validation testing.
Assists with hardware selection and memory/processing needs.
Estimates time to develop software and scopes development with management.
Collaborates with other engineering disciplines and focuses on getting the job done.
Supports transition to production and certification; participates in teams.
Develops proof-of-concept capability demonstrations and design reviews.
Contributes to AV's software development process with quality code.
Handles significant issues requiring evaluation of intangibles.
