Job summary

AeroVironment is seeking a Software Engineer III (Embedded) in Huntsville, AL to develop and test software for embedded devices used in unmanned and robotic systems. You will design, code, test, and debug system software for aircraft payloads and other platforms, with opportunities for flight tests and rapid prototyping.

The role requires strong C/C++ and Python skills, experience with embedded Linux concepts such as kernel drivers, RTOS familiarity, and a drive to optimize efficiency,

Qualifications

• BS degree in Computer Science/Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related field is required or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Minimum of 5 - 8 years of relevant experience.
• Expert with Python, C, C++11, C++ STL and/or OpenCL.
• Knowledge of Visual Studio, Eclipse or similar IDE and defect tracking tools.
• Experience with common protocols such as RS-485, RS-232, CAN, I2C, SPI, USB.
• Mathematical and analytical skills required.
• Travel likely required for testing equipment and customer field support at approved locations.
• Periods of development may require long irregular hours around deadlines, weekends and some holidays and in field test environments.

Responsibilities

• Writes and tests software to support integration of sensors and embedded processors into aircraft or other robotic systems.
• Designs and implements software for prototypes and products using AeroVironment tools and practices; ensure good configuration control.
• Assists in writing system requirements and test plans; aids in hardware selection and memory/storage recommendations.
• Contributes to rapid prototyping and conceptual testing; estimates development time and scope to fit timelines.
• Provides development updates and milestone estimates to track progress and meet schedule.
• Troubleshoots complex systems from a software perspective; supports flight test operations.
• Supports transition of development software to production environments and certification; participates in multidisciplinary teams.
• Develops proof-of-concept capability demonstrations; conducts design reviews.
• Handles complex issues requiring deep knowledge of variable factors; selects methods to obtain results.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
