Job summary

The Medical University of South Carolina seeks a Lactation Consultant to provide professional nursing care for breastfeeding mothers and to develop educational programs based on breastfeeding. The role supports mothers from hospital stay through discharge and maintains lactation support after discharge.

This on-site, 20-hour weekly position works within the Nursing department to promote best practices in lactation care. RN licensure and required credentials are essential.

Qualifications

• Associate Degree and current RN license in the state of South Carolina.
• CPR certification is required.
• Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification required.

Responsibilities

• Teaches patients about breastfeeding and assesses patients’ technique for breastfeeding offering encouragement and support taking into consideration their physical, psycho-social, environmental and spiritual needs.
• Evaluates outcomes of patient teaching, consults with other specialists as required and adjusts nursing care processes as necessary to obtain optimal patient care.
• Maintains appropriate patient documentation, records and charts to insure an accurate record of the patients’ medical treatment. Maintains confidentiality.
• Using the interdisciplinary approach formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning including family teaching as appropriate.
• Maintains “Warm Line” for breastfeeding help after discharge.
• Provides in-service education for staff re breastfeeding practices.
• Performs other miscellaneous and related duties as assigned by the director of nursing.
