Job summary

Qualifications

• Bachelor or higher degree not specified.
• RN license required in state of practice, plus lactation certification within 2 years.

Responsibilities

• Assesses patient's needs, diagnoses lactation problems, plans and implements intervention, and evaluates outcomes.
• Visits breastfeeding mothers while hospitalized and/or telephones post-discharge to assess learning needs and provide lactation support.
• Provides outpatient care and consultation for families with breastfeeding difficulties and/or follow-up visits.
• Develops and manages outpatient lactation services and/or phone support; may include breast pump rentals or retail store.
• Leads staff education on breastfeeding and provides in-services.
• Provides leadership in breastfeeding across hospital staff and community using current research.
• Conducts prenatal classes and evaluates outcomes; participates in teaching groups and updates materials annually.
• Serves as consultant to physicians and other providers on lactation-related health issues.
• Maintains statistics and documentation for breastfeeding clients and provides reports.
