Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) invites applications for a Senior Laboratory Technician at GateWay Community College. The role supports instructional labs in life and physical sciences, ensuring safe, efficient operation of facilities, equipment, and materials to aid learning for students and faculty.

Under supervision, you will prepare labs, supervise student workers, manage purchasing and inventory, care for plants and animals, and uphold safety with hazardous materials.

Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree plus two years of instructional-lab support experience or an equivalent combination of degree and relevant full-time work.
  • A. Associates degree or higher in STEM.
  • B. Experience in managing a laboratory stockroom and inventory.
  • C. Experience caring for plants, animals, and preserved specimens.
  • D. Experience in laboratory safety and hazardous materials handling.
  • E. Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing lab equipment.
  • F. Experience supervising student employees in a lab/educational setting.
  • G. Experience with MS Office, Google Suite, and science/education software.
  • J. One year MCCCD experience in the last two years.

Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Preparation and Operations: set up equipment, supplies, and materials for labs; keep materials organized and maintained.
  • Student Worker Supervision and Training: direct and mentor student workers; train on equipment use and safety.
  • Purchasing, Inventory, and Equipment Maintenance: manage purchases, maintain records, fix equipment, update purchasing data.
  • Animal and Plant Care: care for lab animals and plants; manage tanks and inventories.
  • Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Materials: handle hazardous materials, maintain SDS, ensure safety compliance.

Job Summary

Now hiring at GateWay Community College! Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Senior Lab Technician provides technical and operational support for instructional laboratories within the life and physical sciences. The position contributes to the safe, efficient, and effective operation of laboratory facilities, equipment, materials, and resources that support student learning and faculty instruction.

The Senior Lab Technician works collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, administrators, vendors, and service personnel and applies sound technical knowledge, safety practices, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills in a diverse educational environment. The position demonstrates a commitment to service excellence, student success, integrity, innovation, inclusiveness, communication, and collaboration.

Essential Functions

60% - Laboratory Preparation and Operations:
Prepares, organize, and set up complex laboratory equipment, supplies, solutions, and materials for student laboratory exercises. Replenish, clean, maintain, and properly store laboratory materials and equipment. Coordinates with faculty, staff, and vendors to support and optimize laboratory operations.

15% - Student Worker Supervision and Training:
Provides work direction and scheduling for student employees. Train, advise, and mentor student workers in the proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities, as well as in the preparation of laboratory materials, including solutions and media.

10% - Purchasing, Inventory, and Equipment Maintenance:
Purchases and receive laboratory materials, supplies, and equipment. Maintains accurate records of equipment and inventory. Assemble, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex laboratory equipment as needed. Maintains and update financial and purchasing records.

10% - Animal and Plant Care:
Provides care for laboratory animals and plants used in general biology courses. Maintains and clean tanks and related environments, monitor feeding schedules, maintain inventories, and research appropriate animal-care practices and plant supplies to support instructional needs.

5% - Laboratory Safety and Hazardous Materials:
Determines and implement appropriate procedures for the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintains current Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and ensures laboratory practices comply with applicable safety requirements. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two (2) years of experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in the area of assignment.

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A. Associates degree or higher in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field.

B. Experience working in, organizing, maintaining, and managing a laboratory stockroom in an industry or educational setting, including inventory management and purchasing.

C. Experience caring for plants, animals, micro stock cultures and preserved specimens.

D. Experience in laboratory safety and training, including hazardous chemical handling, storage, disposal, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper disposal of hazardous materials.

E. Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical and/or mechanical laboratory equipment.

F. Experience supervising, training, directing, or working with student employees in a laboratory/educational environment.

G. Experience with MS Office Products, Google Suite applications, and science or education software.

J.One (1) year full-time relevant MCCCD experience during the previous two (2) years.

Special Working Conditions
  • May be required to travel or be assigned to all GateWay locations.
  • May require some evenings or weekends.
  • May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen.
  • Work may be performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to hazardous physical conditions (such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibration, etc.
  • Moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.
  • Moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, blood or other body fluids).
  • Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures or intense noise.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #50 lbs.
  • MCCCD does not sponsor individuals for any type of work visas.
