Responsibilities

  • Maintain construction laboratories in a safe, clean, organized, and instruction-ready condition.
  • Prepare work areas, tools, equipment, materials for scheduled classes and labs.
  • Assist instructors with demonstrations, projects, and laboratory activities.
  • Monitor inventory, place orders, and manage storage using purchasing systems.
  • Perform safety inspections and ensure PPE and hazard controls are in place.
  • Record keeping, coordination with instructors, vendors, and college personnel.

Job Summary

This is a specially funded position anticipated through June 30, 2027 with extension depending on funding and executive approval.

The Construction Lab Technician will provide direct operational support to the Construction Program and its instructors by preparing laboratories, maintaining tools and equipment, organizing materials, assisting with instructional activities, monitoring inventory, and ensuring that laboratory spaces are ready for student use. This support is particularly important given the volume and variety of construction materials, tools, equipment, and specialized supplies required across the program's courses.

Essential Functions
  1. Construction Laboratory Operations and Instructional Support - Perform daily operational activities necessary to maintain construction laboratories in a safe, clean, organized, and instruction-ready condition. Prepare work areas, tools, equipment, materials, and supplies for scheduled classes and laboratory activities. Assist instructors with hands-on demonstrations, projects, and laboratory activities. (25%)
  2. Materials, Tools, and Equipment Handling - Receive, move, transport, stage, organize, and store construction materials, tools, equipment, and supplies. Frequently lift, carry, push, pull, and position materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Utilize appropriate material-handling techniques and equipment when moving heavier or oversized items. (15%)
  3. Equipment Operation, Maintenance, and Shop Readiness - Operate, inspect, clean, maintain, and organize construction tools, machinery, and laboratory equipment. Perform routine maintenance and minor adjustments as appropriate and identify equipment requiring repair or replacement. Maintain equipment in a safe and operational condition for instructional use. (15%)
  4. Purchasing, Inventory, and Supply Management - Monitor inventory of construction materials, tools, equipment, and consumable supplies. Determine routine replenishment needs, place authorized orders, receive deliveries, verify materials, and maintain organized storage. Utilize District purchasing systems and procurement card (P-card) procedures as assigned, including documentation and reconciliation of purchases. (15%)
  5. Safety and Hazard Prevention - Perform daily safety inspections of construction laboratories, work areas, tools, equipment, and materials. Identify and address unsafe conditions and maintain appropriate safety practices, PPE, housekeeping, tool storage, and material storage. Assist instructors and students in following established laboratory safety procedures. (10%)
  6. Physical Construction and Facility Support - Perform hands-on tasks associated with the operation and maintenance of construction laboratory spaces, including moving materials, assembling or disassembling work areas, preparing project materials, setting up equipment, cleaning work areas, and assisting with minor facility or laboratory maintenance activities. (10%)
  7. Outdoor and Variable Work Environment - Perform duties both indoors and outdoors, including construction-related activities in varying weather conditions. Work around dust, dirt, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, machinery, construction materials, and other conditions commonly associated with construction laboratories and job sites. (5%)
  8. Records, Coordination, and Program Support - Maintain records related to inventory, equipment, maintenance, purchases, P-card transactions, and laboratory operations. Coordinate with instructors, vendors, college personnel, and other stakeholders to ensure materials, equipment, and laboratory spaces are available when needed. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two (2) years of experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in the area of assignment, construction trade

OR

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications
  • A. Construction Industry Experience. Demonstrated experience in construction, construction trades, building maintenance, or a closely related technical field, with knowledge of common construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
  • B. Construction Tools and Equipment. Experience safely operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and organizing construction tools, power equipment, machinery, and laboratory/shop equipment.
  • C. Educational or Training Environment Experience. Experience working in a community college, technical school, high school CTE program, apprenticeship, training facility, construction laboratory, or similar educational environment, including supporting hands-on instruction.
  • D. Safety and Hazard Management. Knowledge and demonstrated application of construction and occupational safety practices, including PPE, equipment safety, material handling, hazard identification, and maintaining a safe laboratory/shop environment.
  • E. Purchasing, Inventory, and Resource Management. Experience purchasing materials, tools, equipment, and supplies; maintaining inventory; receiving and organizing materials; working within budgets; and using purchasing cards or similar financial systems, including transaction documentation and reconciliation.
  • F. Construction Documentation and Communication. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, equipment manuals, and technical documentation, and communicate effective-ly with instructors, students, vendors, contractors, and college personnel.
  • G. One year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience during the previous two years.
Special Working Conditions

Will be required to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work outdoors in the Arizona climate.

General Physical and Operational Requirements - Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, climb ladders or steps, and work in various positions while performing laboratory and construction-related duties. Maintain sufficient physical mobility, strength, coordination, and dexterity to safely perform essential job functions.

Required to work evening hours; Between 12pm - 10pm M-F

Summer work hours vary; Between 5:00am and 6:00pm M - Thurs.

Local and state to state travel will be required, including driving a multi-passenger van. Possession of a valid State of Arizona Class D Driver's License is required; employee must meet district minimum standards regarding driving: http://www.maricopa.edu/legal/rmi/vehicle.htm#requirements

May be required to travel or be assigned to another MCCD location. Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense. MCC does not sponsor individuals for work visas.
