Lab Assistant, General Laboratory

PRN/OCC, Hours and shifts vary

Position Summary

Perform venous and capillary blood specimen collection and handling, ensure customer safety and comfort, perform clerical/computer duties, and courier responsibilities as required.

Responsibilities

• Provide excellent customer service and OP collection as a priority.
• Handle registration professionally, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
• Gather demographic, medical, and financial data from outpatients, record data accurately in HIS.
• Transcribe medical orders and diagnosis, order lab tests, and follow-up on verbal orders.
• Answer departmental phones, transfer calls, assist with test result retrieval, and handle confidential information appropriately.
• Use HIS, LIS, and reference lab systems effectively.
• Process specimens properly, including accessioning, centrifugation, and storage, and operate pneumatic tube system.
• Collect blood samples using aseptic techniques, label specimens accurately, and adhere to patient identification protocols.
• Maintain cleanliness of work areas.
• Review physician’s orders for errors, file orders, and notify supervisors of issues.
• Distribute reports and manage specimen pick-up and courier duties.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and comply with policies and regulations.
• Review communication logs and serve as a resource for difficult sticks.
• Follow safety standards, complete education requirements, and participate in initiatives.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience considered.

Minimum Experience: Entry-level, basic computer skills.

Licensure: Certification by NCA, ASCP, ASPT, or similar is desirable.
