Job summary

Maryland State Department of Education seeks School-Based Literacy Coaches to improve K-3 reading through job-embedded coaching grounded in the Science of Reading and HQIM. Coaches will promote coherent literacy instruction across grades and support MTSS-based decisions.

Coaching focuses on building teacher capacity, delivering HQIM, and data-driven interventions within Maryland’s preK-3 policy framework. Travel across the state is required.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or 36 post-baccalaureate credits required.
• Four years of administrative or teaching experience in literacy/reading in P–12 settings.
• Notes: substitutions allowed (two extra years of related experience in lieu of education).

Responsibilities

• Lead teachers through individual literacy coaching cycles.
• Provide non-evaluative coaching to strengthen reading instruction aligned to the Science of Reading.
• Support teachers in delivering systematic foundational skills instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension.
• Model structured literacy through co-teaching, lesson modeling, and coaching; conduct observations and provide literacy-focused feedback.
• Guide teachers in implementing HQIM for reading and interpreting early literacy screeners and diagnostics.
• Deliver professional learning aligned to the Science of Reading and HQIM implementation.
• Train teachers on using literacy data to inform instructional decisions within MTSS literacy framework.
