Job summary

The NC Department of Transportation seeks an Engineer I (NS) for the New Bern Construction Office to assist the Resident Engineer in managing roadway and structure projects. You will supervise lower-level technicians, inspect projects, and prepare pay estimates and contract documents.

You will work outdoors in varying weather, interact with contractors and officials, and ensure compliance with erosion control and permit requirements while applying safe engineering judgment in daily decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
  • Experience reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.
  • Experience administering contracts.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect roadway, utility, and structure projects as a project inspector.
  • Prepare monthly and final pay estimates and review supplemental agreements and claims.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental erosion control and permit requirements; resolve constructability issues.
