Job description

We are looking for an experienced Controller to step in and own day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls for a nonprofit healthcare organization. This is a hands-on interim engagement for an accounting leader who is comfortable being the person the CFO relies on: closing the books accurately, keeping AP and AR running cleanly, and turning the numbers into something leadership can actually make decisions from.

Overview & Highlights:
  • Schedule: Full time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Work Setting: Nonprofit healthcare organization — corporate accounting and finance department
  • Remote / Hybrid / On-Site Status: Remote (On-site preferred; open to a remote support arrangement for the right candidate)
Location & Logistics:
  • Work Environment: Professional administrative office supporting a multi-site nonprofit provider organization
  • Department or Team: Small accounting team — you oversee the accounts payable and accounts receivable staff directly
  • Patient-Facing Responsibilities: None — this is a corporate finance and accounting role
  • Systems / Software: Sage financial systems; advanced Excel; broader ERP exposure is a plus
  • Travel: Occasional local travel within the community as needed
  • Reporting Structure: Reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer
About the Opportunity / A Day in the Life:

You are the accounting function’s day-to-day owner. Mornings tend to belong to the close and the numbers — reviewing the general ledger, checking reconciliations, working through month-end entries, and making sure the financial statements will hold up. Afternoons shift toward people and process: reviewing AP batches, checking on AR follow-up, answering the questions your two direct reports bring you, and keeping the cadence moving so nothing sits.

Because the team is small, the work is genuinely hands-on. You are not managing managers — you are in the ledger, in Excel, and in the reporting yourself, with two people supporting you on the transactional side. That also means you see the whole picture, from a single invoice through to the statements the CFO takes to leadership.

The other half of the job is reporting and controls. You produce the monthly, quarterly and annual financial packages, keep cost-center and program-level reporting accurate across multiple sites, maintain the internal controls that protect the organization’s assets, and support the annual audit and tax filings. When leadership asks why a line moved, you are the person who can answer it clearly and back it up.

Why This Role Stands Out:
  • Real ownership from day one — you run the accounting function, not a slice of it
  • Direct line to the CFO, with visibility into how financial decisions actually get made
  • Small, focused team where your work is visible and your judgment carries weight
  • Mission-driven nonprofit environment — the money you steward funds services the community depends on
  • Predictable Monday–Friday, 8–5 schedule in a region with an unusually good cost-of-living-to-lifestyle ratio
  • Flexibility on work setting: on-site is preferred, but a remote support arrangement is on the table for the right person
What We’re Looking For:
  • An experienced accountant who is comfortable being hands-on in the ledger, not just reviewing other people’s work
  • Someone who can close the books accurately and on time, month after month, without being chased
  • A clear communicator who can explain financial results to people who do not work in finance
  • A steady supervisor who can develop and support a small AP/AR team
  • Strong internal-controls instincts and a low tolerance for sloppy documentation
  • Someone who can step in quickly and add value without a long ramp-up
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements for accuracy, compliance and timeliness
  • Own the month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals and account reconciliations
  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable and general ledger maintenance
  • Supervise, mentor and develop the AP and AR staff, setting priorities and reviewing their work
  • Develop and manage budgets, produce forecasts, and support financial planning and analysis
  • Maintain cost-center and program-level reporting that supports a multi-site organization
  • Implement and maintain internal controls that safeguard assets, ensure accurate reporting and prevent fraud
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulatory and funder requirements
  • Coordinate with external auditors through the annual audit and implement resulting recommendations
  • Monitor cash flow and working capital, and support the CFO with liquidity and financial planning
  • Oversee tax filings and reporting, ensuring accurate and timely submission
  • Evaluate and improve financial processes and systems to strengthen efficiency, accuracy and reporting capability
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business
  • 5–7 years of accounting or finance experience — healthcare experience is not required
  • At least 3 years in a supervisory or management capacity
  • Strong working knowledge of accounting software, plus advanced Excel skills
  • In-depth knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting and regulatory compliance standards
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting financial information to non-financial audiences
  • Must be able to provide or obtain an Arizona DPS Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and a driving record that meets organizational guidelines
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Employment is contingent on background checks, which may include fingerprint clearance, drug screening, criminal history, driving record, employment verification, education verification and professional references
Preferred Background:
  • Master’s degree in finance or accounting
  • Hands-on experience with Sage financial systems
  • Nonprofit healthcare or nonprofit accounting experience, including grant, funder or program-level reporting
  • Multi-site or multi-entity accounting experience
  • Experience building or refining a cost accounting framework
  • Familiarity with ERP implementations or financial system improvement projects
This Role Is Likely a Fit If You…
  • Like owning the whole accounting function rather than a narrow piece of it
  • Are as comfortable in the detail as you are in the summary reporting
  • Enjoy being a small team’s go-to answer for anything financial
  • Take satisfaction in a clean close, tight reconciliations and an audit that goes smoothly
  • Want your work to support a mission rather than a margin
  • Can step into an existing process, stabilize it, and improve it as you go
This Role May Not Be a Fit If You…
  • Want a large accounting department with layers of staff underneath you
  • Prefer to review and approve rather than prepare and reconcile yourself
  • Are looking for a purely strategic or advisory finance seat with no transactional work
  • Would rather avoid supervising and coaching staff day to day
  • Need a long onboarding runway before you can produce independently
  • Are not open to an interim, contract-based engagement
Why Join Us:

This is a chance to bring order, accuracy and confidence to the finances of a nonprofit provider organization that people in the community genuinely rely on. You will work closely with a CFO who wants a real partner in the accounting seat, support a small team that appreciates good leadership, and see the direct connection between disciplined financial management and services that stay available to the people who need them.
