They support diverse programs funded through a combination of government contracts, grants, donations, and program revenue. The finance team plays a critical role in ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and transparency across the organization’s operations.
Position Overview
The Senior Staff Accountant is a key contributor within the Accounting & Finance team, responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, timeliness, and compliance of financial activities.
Key Responsibilities
Core Accounting & Oversight
- Oversee day‑to‑day accounting operations across AP, AR, and Staff Accountant functions
- Review invoices, payments, deposits, allocations, journal entries, and reconciliations for accuracy and compliance
- Maintain integrity of the general ledger and support month‑end and year‑end close processes
- Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations, schedules, and supporting documentation
Financial Reporting & Compliance
- Assist with preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
- Prepare supporting schedules in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Support restricted and unrestricted fund accounting, including grants and deferred revenue
- Assist with financial reports related to contracts, grants, and funding sources
Process Improvement & Systems
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting workflows, documentation, and controls
- Support implementation and optimization of accounting systems and automation tools
- Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation
Collaboration & Leadership Support
- Partner with Program, HR, Operations, and Development teams to ensure accurate coding and timely processing
- Provide technical guidance and day‑to‑day support to accounting staff
- Promote consistency, quality, and a collaborative team environment
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required)
Experience
- 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience
- Hands‑on experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, and month‑end close
- Experience with AP and AR functions
- Exposure to nonprofit, fund accounting, grants, or multi‑fund environments preferred
- Experience supporting GAAP financial reporting
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills
- Experience reviewing or supporting the work of other accounting staff preferred
